The Sebald Quarter, visible in the foreground and center of the image, was almost completely destroyed in the devastating air raid of January 2, 1945. During the reconstruction, the major monumental buildings were largely reconstructed true to the original, while the destroyed residential neighborhood was rebuilt in a way that preserved its historic architecture and street layout.
