The Hauptmarkt is the central square of Nuremberg’s Old Town. The weekly markets and the Christkindlesmarkt are still held here today. On the right is the 14th-century Frauenkirche. The Neptune Fountain was erected in the center of the square in 1902.
During World War II, the buildings on the square were largely destroyed. Of the church, only the walls of the nave and the facade survived. After the war, the square was rebuilt in a very simplified form; the historic townhouses were completely lost. The Neptune Fountain was dismantled by the Nazis in 1934 and has stood in Nuremberg’s City Park since 1962.
