The Rue du Pilier Rouge ("Street of the Red Pillar") takes its name from the half-timbered house on the far right of the picture. It dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and now houses the tourist office. According to legend, the reddish color of the pillar on this house came from the executioner who wiped his bloody hands here.
On the far left of the picture you can see part of the "Palais des comtes du Maine", which was built in the 12th to 15th centuries and was the seat of the House of Plantagenêt. Today the town hall is located there.
