When the new Veterans Memorial Bridge over Belfast, Maine's river was completed in 1963, a bypass around the city was also completed. At first the intersection of Routes 1 and 3 was a 138-foot wide open section which required stop signs and crossing 4 lanes of road. Accidents were common. It wasn't until 1973 the overpass was completed.
