View on the Antwerp Suikerrui from the Steenplein, around 1900 and in 2018. The Suikerrui is a street in the old center of the city which connects the Grote Markt with the eastern shore of the Scheldt. At the time there was still driving the tram; nowaday the street is resered for pedestrians.
Antwerp is one of the few central European cities with a largely preserved historical center. Many buildings from the heyday of the city can still be admired today. Outstanding is the Cathedral of Our Lady, whose gigantic tower is a UNESCO world heritage site. The building on the left is a former shipping company; today the building in neo-Italian Renaissance style houses a museum about the Antwerp painter Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930).In the house on the right was then as today a café.
