The name's origins come from two Old Polish terms: "czart," meaning devil, demon, or evil spirit, and "ryj," meaning difficult-to-access wet meadows or marshes. This likely referred to meadows along the Warta River, which were difficult to access. It was believed at the time that such areas were inhabited by local demons.
