The Antwerpen-Centraal train station was built between 1899 and 1905 by the design of the engineer Clement Van Bogaert. It includes a gigantic entrance hall of 186 m length, 66 m width and 43 m height (the latter took into account the exhaust fumes of the steam locomotives). The stone reception building with its eclectic style and its 75 m high dome was popularly known as the "railway cathedral". The roof of iron and glass allows an abundance of light into the main terminal.
In the mid-20th century, the station was structurally in very poor condition and almost deconstructed; the dome threatened to collapse and in 1957 a falling stone even hit a passenger. The building, however, received monument protection and was extensively renovated in 1993.
After the old building was no longer able to accommodate the increasing number of trains, the building was redesigned; the train service is now handled on four levels, at the same time preserving the historical reception building.
The Antwerp train station is today considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
La gare d'Anvers-Central a été construite entre 1899 et 1905 d'après les plans de l'ingénieur Clement Van Bogaert. Elle comprend un hall d'entrée gigantesque de 186 m de long, 66 m de large et 43 m de haut (ces dernières dimensions tenant compte des gaz d'échappement des locomotives à vapeur). Le bâtiment d'accueil en pierre, de style éclectique et surmonté d'un dôme de 75 m de haut, était surnommé la « cathédrale ferroviaire ». Sa toiture en fer et en verre laisse pénétrer une abondante lumière dans le terminal principal.
Au milieu du XXe siècle, la gare était en très mauvais état et menaçait d'être démolie ; le dôme s'effondrait et, en 1957, une pierre tombée a même blessé un voyageur. Le bâtiment a cependant été classé monument historique et a fait l'objet d'une importante rénovation en 1993.
L'ancien bâtiment étant devenu trop petit pour accueillir le nombre croissant de trains, il a été repensé ; le service ferroviaire est désormais assuré sur quatre niveaux, tout en préservant le bâtiment d'accueil historique.
La gare d'Anvers est aujourd'hui considérée comme l'une des plus belles au monde.
