"Het Steen" is a medieval city castle of Antwerp. Originally built in the 12th century, it is the oldest building in Antwerp. The castle on the right bank of the Scheldt was part of the city fortifications and was intended to protect access to the city from the direction of the Westerschelde.
Today's castle has little in common with the original building. First, it was rebuilt in the 16th century, to accommodate artillery and accound for the nobility's requirements for more comfort, and then served as a prison until 1823. Subsequently, the building had different provisions, e.g. as a residential building, sawmill and fish store.
Between 1875 and 1911, most of the complex, including dozens of historic houses and the city's oldest church, was demolished to reinforce the harbor dam against the rising Scheldt. The older photo stems from this phase.
The remaining building, heavily modified, was from 1862 a museum of antiquities and from 1952 to 2008 the National Maritime Museum, which moved to the nearby museum aan de Stroom in 2011.
"Het Steen" est un château médiéval d'Anvers. Construit à l'origine au 12ème siècle, c'est le plus ancien bâtiment d'Anvers. Le château situé sur la rive droite de l'Escaut faisait partie des fortifications de la ville et était destiné à protéger l'accès à la ville depuis la direction de la Westerschelde.
Le château actuel a peu de choses en commun avec le bâtiment d'origine. D'abord, il a été reconstruit au XVIe siècle pour accueillir l'artillerie et tenir compte des exigences de la noblesse pour plus de confort, puis a servi de prison jusqu'à 1823. Par la suite, le bâtiment comportait différentes dispositions, par exemple: comme bâtiment résidentiel, scierie et poissonnerie.
Entre 1875 et 1911, la plus grande partie du complexe, y compris des dizaines de maisons historiques et la plus vieille église de la ville, a été démolie pour renforcer le barrage du port, face à la montée de l'Escaut. La photo la plus ancienne provient de cette phase.
Le bâtiment restant, fortement modifié, était à partir de 1862 un musée des antiquités et de 1952 à 2008, le musée national de la mer, qui a été transféré au musée voisin aan de Stroom en 2011.
