The equestrian monument to Prince Mihailo Obrenović, unveiled in 1882, stands before the National Museum (completed 1903). The earlier photograph shows the square in the early 20th century, already arranged around the monument as a fixed point in the city. The composition endures; the moment it commemorates has long passed.
