The Citadel of Corte (also known as the Fortress of Corte) is the historical landmark of inland Corsica and the only fortress on the island not located directly on the coast.
It sits spectacularly atop a steep granite cliff overlooking the old town and the valleys of the Restonica and Tavignano rivers. Its origins date back to 1419, when the Corsican Viceroy Vincentello d'Istria commissioned the construction of the distinctive main tower (the Eagle's Nest). In the 18th century, the French expanded the complex into a sprawling fortress. Today, the fortress houses the Museum of Corsican Anthropology (Musée de la Corse), which delves deeply into the island's culture and history, and offers visitors a unique panoramic view of the central mountainous region.
