Ypres at the start of World War I (October 1914): A residential building on Kloosterpoort Street, completely destroyed by artillery fire. During the first weeks of the war, the building served as a field hospital to care for the wounded. To the right of the rubble lies the Baroque entrance portal (Claustrum Sti Martini), which provided access from the public square to the adjacent cloister grounds of St. Martin’s Cathedral. While large parts of Ypres were reconstructed in accordance with historical accuracy after the war, this row of houses was apparently not rebuilt to its original condition.
