The Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes in Strasbourg owes its name to a public bathhouse that has been located in this neighborhood since the 16th century. It was one of the first municipal baths where people could bathe for a fee. The name “aux Plantes” ("at the plants") refers to the herbs and medicinal plants that were added to the water to enhance the effects of the bath.

On the left is the Maison des Tanneurs, built in 1572. Originally, this was the guild house of the tanners; at the same time, it served as a workplace and storage place for hides and skins. The tanners used the canals of the Ill. In the 19th century, it no longer served as a guild house, but still as a place of residence and work for craftsmen in the neighborhood. At the time the before photo was taken, this still seemed to be the case. After that, it was temporarily threatened with decay, but was listed as a historic monument in 1927. Since 1949, it has housed a wine bar and restaurant.

Today, Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes is a street in the Petite France district that is popular with tourists.
