The 2nd Division was formed in Sendai, Miyagi, in January 1871 as the Sendai Garrison (仙台鎮台, Sendai chindai), one of six regional commands created in the fledgling Imperial Japanese Army. The Sendai Garrison had responsibility for northern Honshū (the Tohoku region), ranging from Fukushima Prefecture in the south to Aomori Prefecture in the north. The six regional commands were transformed into divisions under the army reorganization of 14 May 1888.
La 2e division a été formée à Sendai, Miyagi, en janvier 1871 sous le nom de garnison de Sendai (仙台 鎮 台, Sendai chindai), l'un des six commandements régionaux créés dans la jeune armée impériale japonaise. La garnison de Sendai avait la responsabilité du nord de Honshū (région de Tohoku), allant de la préfecture de Fukushima au sud à la préfecture d'Aomori au nord. Les six commandements régionaux sont transformés en divisions lors de la réorganisation de l'armée du 14 mai 1888.
