British soldiers with civilians in Caen after the liberation of the city in July 1944, on Rue Caponière at the intersection with Rue Neuve Bourg l'Abbé. Caen suffered particularly badly during World War II as a result of the German occupation and Allied bombing; much of the city was destroyed. The capture of the city after the Allied landing proved more difficult than planned, and it took a total of about six weeks, during "Operation Charnwood", to liberate the city.
