Bergsprängargränd is a small street in Södermalm, a southern district of Stockholm. The name roughly translates as "rock blasters' alley" and refers to the fact that the neighborhood was built on hard granite rock that had to be blasted away. Here you can see typical apartments in a working-class neighborhood, one of the poorest in the city. Large families lived in cramped conditions in dilapidated wooden houses. In addition to rock blasters, shipyard and dock workers also lived here. In the background is Sofia kyrka, consecrated in 1906. In 1897, the “Vita Bergen” park was created here, originally as a recreational area for workers.

Some of the old houses have been preserved to this day and are listed as historic monuments. They are now part of the park. Today, the area is a picturesque idyll, far from the poverty of the 19th century. The neighborhood has become an attractive and expensive place to live. Some of the houses still serve as normal living space, while others are used for cultural purposes.
