The Bern City Hall was built between 1406 and 1417 in the late Gothic style as part of the reconstruction following a fire in the city. Since then, it has been constantly rebuilt and altered. In 1787, it also fell victim to a fire. From 1865 to 1868, the facades were re-clad in the neo-Gothic style. Between 1940 and 1942, under the socialist building director Robert Grimm, it was given its current appearance. As can be seen, many decorative elements were removed and replaced with new figures reflecting Grimm's socialist orientation.
