Chellah is an ancient burial site of the Merinid dynasty from the 13th - 15th century, in present-day Rabat. It is enclosed by a 14th century wall through which one enters through an imposing gate, the Bab Chellah. The necropolis was abandoned in the 15th century and was subsequently damaged by several earthquakes. Archaeological excavations in the 20th century brought to light the ruins of the Roman city that previously stood here.
Chellah was last extensively restored in May 2024 and has been open to visitors again since then.
