The Hassan Tower is the minaret of a large mosque that was begun around 1190 under Sultan El Mansour but never completed. It would have been one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. It was to rest on 424 columns and pillars. The unfinished minaret and the pillars are all that remain of this ruined building. In the 1960s, the site of the ruins was transformed to house the mausoleum of Mohammed V. The columns were also moved in order to pave the square (which is why the columns in the before vs. after picture do not match). The site is now one of Rabat's World Heritage Sites and attracts many tourists.
