Bab Mansour is a monumental gate in Mèknes dating from 1732, which is located on the central El-Hedim Square and separates the medieval old town (medina) from the palace city from the same period. It is one of the most beautiful and imposing gates in Morocco.
Today it is closed most of the time and you can only go through a side entrance. The gate has protruding side sections on the right and left; the left side section appears to be walled up in the old picture, possibly for structural stabilization reasons.
In addition, a few people wearing European colonialist clothing can be seen in the old picture. Therefore, the old photo probably dates from the beginning of the French protectorate period in Morocco (1912-1956).
Together with the historic old town of Meknès, the gate is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been restored since 2019 and became visbible again only recently.
