Here you can see the monumental entrance gate to the archaeological site of Chellah, a former Roman and later Islamic necropolis located south-east of the old town of Rabat. According to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the old photo was taken by Jean Du Taillis between 1905 and 1913, shortly before or during the period of the French protectorate (1912-1956). It was during this period that the site was first restored and opened to the public.

A few men can be seen making their way to the gate, presumably carrying rifles. They could be members of local security forces or tribesmen - unfortunately, no more information about this can be found.
