In 1817, the Doctor of Laws Gerhard Friedrich von Gülich donated 1000 taler for the construction of a gate to honor the Waterloo-fighters from Osnabrück. He assigned Johann Christian Siekmann to the design of the gate, similar to a triumph arch (with kind permission of www.bildpostkarten.uos.de).
