The clock tower in Auxerre dates back to a defensive tower that was part of the Gallo-Roman fortifications. In 1483, a city gate was built next to it, and in the 17th century, the clock tower was finally added. It displays both the time of day and the phases of the moon. The clock has been modified and restored several times over the years – in 1933 the clock face appears to have looked slightly different.
The row of houses on the left shows that the half-timbered facades were plastered at that time. Later, the trend was to expose the historic half-timbering.
