The Zytglogge (“time bell”) is a clock tower in the historic old town of Bern. Originally built in the Middle Ages as a defensive tower, it was converted into a clock tower in the 15th century when it lost its defensive function. In 1530, an astronomical calendar and clock were installed by Kaspar Brunner.
In the old picture, the lower dial is still relatively simple, while the background of the upper dial is more richly painted. In fact, the tower underwent several redesigns and restorations. In the 1890s, the facades were restored by Rudolf von Steiger; in 1929, the frescoes were redesigned and the clock painting was also adapted. The old photograph must therefore have been taken either before the restoration in 1890 or at least before that in 1929. The Zytglogge was last restored in the 1980s. On closer inspection, the facade of the house to the left of the tower also appears to have had more paintings at that time.
Today, the Zytglogge is part of Bern's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
