View of the gate "Bab Dekkakin" in the old Mechouar (inner courtyard) of the Royal Palace in Fez. The palace was originally founded in the 13th century, while the current structure dates mainly from the 17th to the 20th century. Today, it is one of the official residences of the King of Morocco.
Originally, access was only through the archway on the left, while the central passage was opened later, in 1884. The archway on the right was added afterward to create symmetry, although at the time this photograph was taken, it had not yet been decorated to match the one on the left.
While many people are wearing traditional local clothing, a man in a European-style suit can be seen on the left. Morocco was colonized by France from 1912 to 1956. Like at the time of the old photo, merchants can still be found in this area today. However, the place is now also frequented by many tourists.
